INDIANAPOLIS -- Adam Vinatieri had two wishes in free agency. He wanted to win one more Super Bowl ring for his thumb, and he wanted to do it with the Colts. Indianapolis refused to let the 41-year-old kicker slip away Wednesday, re-signing Vinatieri just hours before he was to become an unrestricted free agent. "Id like to be here if the cards fall right," Vinatieri said in January, after the Colts were eliminated with a playoff loss at New England, where he won three Super Bowls. "Obviously this locker rooms awesome. Ive got a lot of friends in this locker room and Ive got the most admiration for the ownership here and coaches and staff and everything. So if its up to me, Id love to be here." Terms of the deal were not announced by the team. But the signing was well-received by Vinatieris current and future teammates, especially those on a kicking unit that has developed a tight bond over the past two seasons. Indy kept punter and kickoff specialist Pat McAfee last week, agreeing to a five-year deal. Long snapper Matt Overton, who went to the Pro Bowl last season, is already under contract. Not surprisingly, Overton and McAfee, two avid fans of Twitter, didnt take long to respond to the news Vinatieri would return to Indy for his 19th NFL season. Overton wrote: "The #4thDownPlayers are back! Congrats to @adamvinatieri & @PatMcAfeeShow on signing new deals!" Later, McAfee, added this: "The Kick attack is back Jack." Vinatieri is widely considered the best clutch kicker in league history. He made two Super Bowl-winning kicks with New England, where he won three Super Bowl rings. He might be best known, however, for making the tying kick to force overtime and the winning kick in overtime in a driving snowstorm to beat Oakland in the "Tuck Rule" playoff game. That win helped propel the Patriots to their first Super Bowl title. He left New England as a free agent following the 2005 season and landed with the Colts, where he immediately won a fourth Super Bowl. The Colts made it back to the Super Bowl following the 2009 season, but lost to New Orleans when Vinatieri was on injured reserve. For most of last season, Vinatieri was the oldest player in the league. He turned 41 in December. But he still had it. Vinatieri finished with the second-highest point total of his career (139), made 35 of 40 field goals and became the seventh player in league history to top 2,000 career points. Hes the second player in league history to score at least 800 points with two teams and needs one more 100-point season to break Jason Elams career record of 16. The Vinatieri signing is the latest in a flurry of moves the Colts have made going into free agency. They signed former Browns linebacker DQwell Jackson last week, then released starting centre Samson Satele to save about $4 million under the new $133 million salary cap. They also tendered three other free agents and re-signed defensive end Fili Moala and linebacker Justin Hickman on Monday. Indy, which had about $36 million to spend in free agency before the Vinatieri, is expected to look for help along the offensive line and on defence when the free agent market opens later Tuesday. He beat Jay Don Blake by two shots.Three weeks have passed since Hockey Canada announced its 25-player mens roster for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. And in that time span, the Tampa Bay Lightning have remained near the top of the Eastern Conference without star forward Steven Stamkos. Playing a key role in the Lightnings recent success has been the play of veteran forward Martin St. Louis, who was passed over by his own general manager Steve Yzerman for a spot on the Canadian Olympic team. The veteran winger and team captain has been on a tear since the Olympic team announcement, racking up 14 points in 10 games since Jan. 7. "I dont think its motivation to be honest," said St. Louis, whose Lightning were set to face the Maple Leafs on Tuesday. "I feel like I played some good hockey this year - Ive had some good bounces - but I dont think (being left off the Olympic team) is motivation. "I mean, Im motivated for Game 1 or Game 10. To play in this league and be successful you need to be motivated. Its been like that my whole career. I dont think these last 10 games Ive been more motivated." St. Louis, who captured his second career Art Ross Trophy last season as the league leader in scoring, also grabbed the spotlight with the first four-goal game of his career against San Jose on Jan. 18. And while hes taken much of the offensive workload in Stamkoss absence, he believes its been a team effort. "At first it was a little shock, obviously, to loose Stammer," he said. "But once thhe dust settled, we realized were where were at without him.dddddddddddd "You have to juggle some lines and find a little bit of an identity. I think we settled down and played some pretty good hockey. We have a lot of young guys that have accelerated in terms of their progress with the amount of ice time theyre getting (and) theyve done well." A lot of credit also goes to great chemistry with his teammates. Summer signing Valtteri Filppula is second in team scoring, while forwards Tyler Johnson, Alex Killorn and Ondrej Palat are making big contributions at both ends of the ice. "If you told us before the season started where wed be after Game 53 knowing all the adversity - not that I didnt believe wed be there - I would think a lot of things would have to go right for us to be here," said St. Louis. "Things have gone well considering all the adversity weve gone through." And at age 38, St. Louis himself is still going strong at a point-a-game pace. "Id like to think that Ive been pretty consistent the past few years," he said. "I expect myself to play like I have, so I dont think this year is better than others. "Obviously I had to adjust a little bit not playing with Stammer and I kind of had to re-invent myself a little with shooting the puck a little bit more. Its hard to shoot as much as I have when you play with a 60-goal guy." ' ' '
